कौवे

Internet पर मैं देखता की कौवे जिनसे भी दोस्ती करते उनके लिए तरह-तरह की चमकीली वस्तुएँ लाते हैं। हमारे यहाँ कौवे पानी के बरतन में मरे हुए मेण्ढक और चिड़िया छोड़ कर जाते थे। इसीलिए शायद इनको अपशकुन माना जाता है। पर तब भी किसी दिन तो मुझे भी एक कौवे से मित्रता करनी है।

चिड़ियाँ

पता नहीं क्यों पर मुझे कौवे और तोते चिड़िया परिवार से नहीं लगते। कबूतर एक चिड़िया है, गौरैया चिड़िया है, मैना, मोर, कोयल, यहाँ तक की उल्लू ये सब एक चिड़िया है। पर तोते और खासकर कौवे अपनी अलग ही प्रजाति के होते।

Evil Counterparts

Everyone has an evil counterpart. The bees have wasps, the ants have termites and I have my brother.

हिय

हिअ/हिय बड़ा ही सुन्दर तद्भव है, हमें इसका ज्यादा प्रयोग करना चाहिए।

Winter foods

I do not miss the winters much except for two or three things, them being: पालक and गाजर का हलवा। Thank you Popeye the Sailor Man, for showing me the पालक way of life.

Noto Emoji

I much prefer Google’s B&W emojis over the coloured ones on my computer. They blend right in with the surrounding text.

There is also an animated variant font which I did not know about earlier. It uses either GIF, WEBP or Lottie files.

VMs on Linux

Recently setting up Windows and MacOS VMs on my system has been a breeze, courtesy of winboat and quickemu. I was especially surprised to find that I could run MacOS without jumping through many hoops. The only setting which I had to turn on was the enable-msr one. I ran MacOS Tahoe, granted it ran like molasses and also was very buggy but I was happy that it at-least ran.

Email in Emacs

4 years ago I had tried to use my email in emacs using notmuch, that effort was not fruitful, plagued by various issues. Though this time around I was successfully able to get my email working on emacs and notmuch.

Thits time instead of isync I used lieer (Thanks ZeStig!) which had a much more streamlined and painless gmail setup. Protesilaos’s video also helped me understand notmuch workflow (Thanks Protesilaos!).

Emacs: Set text direction for every line

While viewing this page through eww in emacs, I noticed that in the post: अमीरख़ान’s ग़ज़ल, the first two lines of the ग़ज़ल in देवनागरी was also right aligned along with the उर्दू text. I had also noticed this problem in org-mode but chalked it off to an org-mode discrepancy.

After coming across this exchange, turns out emacs sets the direction of the text for each paragraph and not for each line, the algorithm can be set for each line by setting the variables:

(setopt bidi-paragraph-start-re "^"
        bidi-paragraph-separate-re "^")

Nice! I also probably need to read the emacs manual more.

Instrumentalists singing

I just LOOOOOOOOOOOVE it when instrumentalists show off their vocal skills, like having insane mastery over an instrument is not enough they must sing divinely too. Case in point: बिस्मिल्लाहख़ान, हनुमानप्रसादमिश्र, बुन्दूख़ान । Some great vocalists like अमीरख़ान and बड़े ग़ुलामअलीख़ान also had their initial training in सारङ्गी।

How I found out about हनुमानप्रसादमिश्र

वैसे राजन-साजन मिश्र अपने पिता से ज्यादा विख्यात हुए, पर मैंने उनसे पहले उनके पिता को ही सुना था क्योंकि मुझे सारङ्गी सुनना अच्छा लगता है। छन्नुलालमिश्र के एक interview में बच्चालालमिश्र का नाम सुना, उनको ढूँढ़ते-ढूँढ़ते मैं sarangi.net पर पहुँचा और वहाँ हनुमानप्रसादमिश्र मिल गए।

Accepting artists on their own terms

Speaking of राजन and साजन मिश्र, I initially avoided hearing them, because I was trying to find their father’s voice in them. हनुमानप्रसादजी’s voice had a pathos which his sons were unable to acquire. But this type of thinking is in vain, they are their own artists. I now enjoy hearing them.

२४ घण्टे गाना सुनने का प्रभाव

I have reached a point where I can subconsciously recognise some of the रागs. This was not the case at all some time ago. I was humming the बन्दिश, “ऐसो नवल लाडली राधा” in राग जयजयवन्ती sung by राजन-साजन मिश्र, while humming it I instinctively linked it with “जिया में लागे आन-बान” (again the version I heard was by राजन-साजन मिश्र) in गारा due to them being similar in nature. The number of रागs I recognise right now is a very small amount though. They are:

  • मियाँ की मल्हार
  • गारा
  • जयजयवन्ती
  • दरबारी
  • भैरवी
  • झिञ्झोटी
  • बहार
  • नन्द

Though I did notice that दरबारी and जौनपुरी sounded similar, and they were! Pretty neat if I say so myself.

अमीरख़ान’s ग़ज़ल

कुछ दिनों पहले पता चला कि अमीरख़ान ने ग़ज़ल गाई है, और क्या ग़ज़ल गाई है! इस ग़ज़ल को मिर्ज़ा ग़ालिब ने लिखा है। पूरी ग़ज़ल:

رہیے اب ایسی جگہ چل کر جہاں کوئی نہ ہو
    ہم سخن کوئی نہ ہو اور ہم زباں کوئی نہ ہو

    بے درودیوار سا اک گھر بنایا چاہیے
    کوئی ہم سایہ نہ ہو اور پاسباں کوئی نہ ہو

    پڑیے گر بیمار تو کوئی نہ ہو بیمار دار
    اور اگر مر جائیے تو نوحہ خواں کوئی نہ ہو
रहिए अब ऐसी जगह चल कर जहाँ कोई ना हो
हम-सुख़न कोई ना हो और हम-ज़बाँ कोई ना हो

बे-दर-ओ-दीवार सा एक घर बनाना चाहिए
कोई हम-साया ना हो और पासबाँ कोई ना हो

पड़िए गर बीमार तो कोई ना हो बीमारदार
और अगर मर जाइए तो नौहा-ख़्वाँ कोई ना हो

सुनने में आता है कि ये अमीरख़ान की इकलौती recorded ग़ज़ल है। ये शायद राग शहाना में है।

Haunting रागs

लोग बोलते हैं कि चन्द्रकौंस में वो “haunted” भाव है, मुझे धनकोनी कल्याण सुनकर भी ऐसा लगता है। जैसे की: मन विहारी मोहन विहारी - ख़याल - जितेन्द्र अभिषेकी, रङ्ग पैराहन का - ग़ज़ल - मेहदी हसन और शहनाई - ख़याल - शैलेश भागवत ।

दाढ़ी-मूँछ

बचपन से ही मुझे दाढ़ी-मूँछ रखने का बहुत शौक था, रवीन्द्रनाथठाकुर या राजारविवर्मा के परशुराम चित्र जैसी। बड़े ग़ुलामअलीख़ान की भी मूँछ बड़ी शानदार हैं, पर खैर मेरी कभी उस तादाद में दाढ़ी-मूँछ उगी ही नहीं।

विलम्बित की चोट

कभी-कभार विलम्बित सुनते समय तबले की एक एक थाप सीने पर चोट करती है।
